Description : |
The brilliant career and controversial personal life of the great British naval hero are retraced in the richly illustrated
selection of his letters. Featuring 140 prints, paintings, and maps, as well as memorabilia, this lavish volume interweaves
the remarkable story of his valor at sea with the colorful and controversial events of his personal life - in particular,
his long love affair with the spirited and kind-hearted Emma Hamilton. Through his letters to his wife, his fellow officers,
and Emma, Nelson emerges not only as a man of ambition and a great leader but as a fragile and emotional personality who
followed the dictates of his heart.

Description : |
After two centuries of biographies and analyses of the man who helped shape the course of history from the decks
of his ships, Admiral Lord Nelson speaks for himself in this collection of compelling excerpts from his private
letters and dispatches. Through Nelson's own words readers come to fully appreciate the admiral's piercing insights
and provocative opinions. With chapters devoted to such subjects as duty, combat, politics, life and death, and Nelson's
views of himself and his wife and his mistress, the book offers an array of memorable quotations. Each is placed in
context to give contemporary dimension to the words. Rare engravings depicting events of Nelson's life accompany the text.
While conventional biographies develop the figure from the outside, this presentation of Nelson's own thoughts, assembled
by an astute researcher, creates a candid self-portrait. For those already familiar with the admiral's accomplishments,
the book offers an opportunity to explore his personality more deeply. For those only vaguely familiar with him, the book
provides an opportunity to get to know one of Britain's most inspiring and complex personalities. Important lessons still
are to be learned from the victor of the battles of the Nile, Copenhagen, and Trafalgar, and as this book ably demonstrates,
Nelson's words could be more instructive now than they were at the onset of Britain's maritime dominance.

This title was originally published as a series of obscure articles in 1843, entitled "Leaves from Memory's Log" and then
collected together by WH Long in 1905. The historical interest centres on Parson's association with Nelson, and the hero's
years at the corrupt court of Naples.

|
Description : |
This visual treasury by curators of Britain's National Maritime Museum predominantly depicts naval battles and ship officers
of Nelson's era. The opening chapters survey the naval technology of ships of the time and how the Admiralty fitted them
out and pressed and disciplined their crews; then we dive into Nelson's life. Along with flattering portraits, the authors
include many contemporary cartoons of Nelson, of him defying the French or of the scandal caused by his romance with Lady
Hamilton. The illustrative highlights are of course genre paintings of Nelson's famous victories at the Nile Delta,
Copenhagen, and, above all, at Trafalgar, unquestionably among the most decisive in history.

Description : |
The Nelson Almanac is a glorious jumble of facts and events brought together as a primer for the aspiring student of
Nelson's era.
Essentially, the book has three basic elements. It is biographical, with lively and provocative articles written by some
of the most respected modern-day Nelson experts and historians. It is a book of his letters, with Nelson himself giving
us first hand information of his experiences. And it is an historical document, encompassing revolution, invasion and war,
discovery, invention and cultural achievement.
These elements have been woven together to produce a kaleidoscopic tapestry of the period. Structured as a diary, each
month is prefaced with an article scrutinising a particular aspect of Nelson's life or naval career. These are followed
by day of the week, with a date for Nelson taken from his letters and papers, together with a date in world history
between 1758 and 1805. Certain dates are further embellished in shorter articles and captioned illustrations which appear
on the opposite page to the diary entry.
The majority of the stunning images that bring the characters and events of the period to life are sourced from the Warwick
Leadley Gallery which holds one of the world's finest collections of Nelson artifacts.
